Chapel Skylight Project #4664 Project Description

In the historic village of Cranston Rhode Island, is a 120 year old stone chapel built in 1891 as part of  Sockanasset School for Boys. The students invested their time and energy in the building of their school. Placement of bricks, stone and mortar reveals some of their handiwork.

The historic stone chapel’s transformation into a destination restaurant, preserved the architectural details including leaded windows, stone hearth and walls, gorgeous woodwork and the bell tower. As it became the Cathedral Bar and Chapel Grille, preserving its historic ambiance, a retractable structure was also considered.  Although it’s surprising to  see Libart’s modern retractable skylights, creatively adding sunshine and a view were transformative.

Working with  state and local historical agencies and blending a retractable structure into the architecture presented creative challenges.  The lower level became the prep kitchen. The main level and mezzanine are dining areas, but additional dining space was needed.  Patios overlooking the scenic Providence skyline offered great space.  To be able to use patio-space during all kinds of weather, retractable walls and a retractable roof system from Libart became part of the design.

Custom clear glass railing systems, bronze fittings, and custom oak handrails blend beautifully into the design while providing unobstructed views. The lighting, art and murals underscore the historic importance of the building and creatively conceal functional requirements and infrastructure. This partnership of old with new gives a historic building renewed life and restaurant patrons a great way to enjoy delicious meals in a beautiful setting.
